Into the Wild (first few chapters)

The beginning of Into the Wild is not typical in comparison to other novels we have read this year. On the cover of the book we are told exactly what happens and the outcome of the protagonists adventures: "In April 1992 a young man from a well-to-do family hitchhiked to Alaska and walked alone into the wilderness north of Mt. McKinley. His name was Christopher McCandless. He had given $25,000 in savings to charity, abandoned his car and most of his possessions, burned all the cash in his wallet, and invented a new life for himself. four months later, his decomposed body was found by a moose hunter..."

Please comment on the following questions:

Why did Krakauer write this book?
Did Krakauer have a larger purpose?
Why did Krakauer start the novel with the ending? Is it more than to just grab our attention?

Shift Happens

At a conference I attended this week, a teacher from another school shared this video. It raises interesting questions about our world, our schools, and our own lives.

How can we prepare for a world that is in constant change? What can you do to be ready for what the world will have to offer and need five, ten, even fifty years from now?

"Of Mice and Men" Chapter 5 and 6 Post

As you finish the novel ask yourself and answer these questions.

Was George justified in what he did to Lennie?
Did migrant workers have any options for a better life?
What role does nature play in the novel's symbolism?
